Insert Finish Contaminates Pasta WaterIf this was a beauty contest, this item would win easily with its shiny clean finish. But as a cooking utensil, it's junk! Washed the pot and inserts upon opening the box. First use resulted in dark material floating around in the water while cooking pasta. Not knowing where it came from, dumped the pasta and washed the pot and insert again. Then cooked water alone to see what would happen and the same result occurred, dark material floating in the water. Further investigation found the material is either bits of the insert material or bits of the insert finish coming off. My guess is the latter since the insert holes are not showing any signs of burrs or loose material from the punches. Despite this item being imported from China, I feel that a brand such as Cuisinart would provide top quality, but apparently that is not the case. I guess they feel their brand name alone will provide sufficient sales. Well, even with a lifetime warranty, I'm not going to spend a lifetime trying to get a good insert that doesn't contaminate my pasta. I am returning this item for full refund and find another brand. If I could give less than one star, I would. Cuisinart is no longer my item of choice for anything related to food preparation or my kitchen.1RUST AFTER FIRST USESo dissapointing!!! I thought Cuisinart was a quality brand but the pasta insert has RUSTY SPOTS after the first and only use!! The insert looks and feels very cheaply made, thin and the holes are scratchy. I thought that's tolerable, but RUST is not. Who knows what else is leaking from this cheapo steel into the food. Yuck! Will return1Time and money saver. Impeccable qualityYes, do not underestimate the value of this. Aside from our saute pan, this has now seen the most use. The steamer and noodle strainer combo makes cooking a variety of dishes so, so much simpler. The quality of the brand and product is top notch too. When I bought this there were cheaper 'off brand' ones, but I have used enough of this company's products to know it would be the one worth getting, and it has been. It has been a while now, but I think the first one I bought arrived dented, but the exchange was fairly straightforward as I bought it through Amazon. Oh, and cleaning is just a matter of throwing it in the dishwasher. I found out about this type of stackable cookware through a cooking class, and it has now saved us both time, hassle, and money. I generally only review products I can talk favorably about, and this is one of them.5Not induction ready as stated in the product description. The reason I gave this stock pot and pasta insert only 1 star wasn t because of the item but because in the incorrect description of this set on the Amazon site. In the description said it was induction ready and unfortunately that wasn t the case. I needed cookware that would work on my induction cooktop. This seems like a nice pan but it most definitely doesn t work if you have an induction cooktop. I would suggest that Amazon updates the information on this item so as to help others not be inconvenienced.1NOT Induction CompatibleUpdate: kudos to Amazon for removing "induction ready" from the product description shortly after I submitted my original review. It would be even better if every cookware description stated definitely whether the item is or is not induction compatible.-----The Amazon product description stated that the stock pot in this set is induction ready. That is absolutely not true. Induction compatible cookware will be attractive to a magnet. I tested it with a magnet that I keep on hand for just this purpose and this pot is definitely not. I further confirmed that it was not induction compatible by putting some water in the pot and putting on my induction stove top. The stove did not detect the pan and no heat was generated.Other than not being induction compatible the set appeared well-made and a good value. Since it was useless to me, I returned it.I was disappointed that this sold-by-Amazon product had a fundamental error in the product description.2Do not buy. Poor Quality Control.Even after washing, there is black residue in the holes of the strainer that remained. Luckily we noticed before adding pasta.1Works Well, but Heavy This pot does a great job of steaming veggies and cooking a pound of dry pasta. For my first batch of pasta, I filled it up to "the line" with water. When it was time to dump the water, it was very difficult to carry the hot, heavy pot to the sink. I am really fortunate I did not spill the boiling water all over myself and the counter. Since the spaghetti package calls for 4 quarts of water, the next time I made spaghetti, I measured out 4 quarts. It came about a third of the way up the pot and was much easier to manage at drain time. Uncovered, the pot takes a long time to heat up on a ceramic stove top burner. After waiting 45 minutes for it to boil at the recommended medium heat setting, I put the heat up to high on my double wattage high heat burner. Once it started boiling, I added the noodles and turned it back to Med-High. Several batches of pasta later, I covered the pot to facilitate the water coming to a boil, then removed the cover and added the pasta. I lowered the heat to 6.5. The pot washes well in the dishwasher, but might not fit in dishwashers that do not have adjustable upper racks. All in all, I am happy with it and believe it to be a good pot for the money. 4Works Great-lovely set Works great.Pros: Good weight, fill line marked inside for pasta max, seals tight, lid fits nicely, pasta insert works wonderful, steamer is very nice with folding handles, can be stored together (I use the plastic it came in so doesn't scratch each other), handles are heavy & easy to grab, insert was a perfect size to miss my vent fan when lifting out on front burners), cleaned up easily. Works on electric stove burns just fine.Cons: Bottom main pot can be heavy when filled with all the water for pasta insert. (might be hard for some people to dump out) *Let cool before trying*I first used it to make homemade pasta in-it turned out perfect. 5Too expensive for black material to be seeping into the waterI ve had this pot for 3 months. It doesn t matter how many times I wash it, scrub it, soak it, etc these black streaks won t go away. It s like this is seeping from the holes in the strainer. And when I cook pasta in it, the black material is in the water. Not very sanitary.1Great stock pot in a great size!Due to numerous health and food issues in my family, I cook all the time and I cook from scratch. A good set of pots and pans is absolutely imperative to cook well. I prefer stainless steel because it looks nice, imparts no off flavors and does not leach toxic chemicals. Stainless steel also washes easier than most other finishes. I own a nice set of 18/8 stainless steel pots and pans which includes 2 - 8 quart (2 gallon) stock pots plus 3 different 5 gallon stock pots. But until I purchased the Cuisinart 77-412 Chef s Classic Stainless 4 Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set, I had nothing in between the2 gallon and 5 gallon stock pots. Whenever I made food like chili or chicken and dumplings, I had to either use my 2 gallon stock pot and make a small batch (and risk food boiling over) or use a 5 gallon stock pot and either make a huge batch or inefficiently use my pot. The Cuisinart 12 quart (3 gallon) stock pot has been a much needed addition to my collection of pots and pans.WHAT IS IN THE BOX: One mirror finish 18/8 stainless steel 12 quart (3 gallon) stock pot with pasta insert, steamer insert and stainless steel lid.WHAT I LIKE: Every single piece of this set fits into my dishwasher! I hate hand washing pots because I just don t think they end up as clean as they do in the dishwasher. This pot is the perfect size for chili! Chili not only tastes better the second day, but it freezes well for fast food on days when I don t have time to cook or I don t feel like cooking. If I am going to go through the trouble of making homemade chili, then I want to make enough for it to be worth my time. Plus, I always end up with more beans after soaking them over night than I think there will be. It is so much easier to cook chili in this 3 gallon pot than it ever was in a 5 gallon stock pot and I just could never seem to make the under 2 gallons of chili necessary to use my smaller stock pots. The pasta insert is great for boiling whole chickens and other things I want to pull out of the cooking liquid. It is also great when I make large quantities of homemade pasta. I like to entertain and this is the perfect size pot for cooking a big meal.I do a lot of all day cooking with this pot and it has never developed a hot spot or given me any trouble. The heat truly is distributed throughout the bottom of the pan resulting in even cooking. This pot is not so deep as to make stirring contents difficult. It is not too heavy to move around even when full.WHAT I DON T LIKE: I prefer clear lids to the metal one on this pan. The clear lid is available on a similar sized pot at an increased cost, but it wasn t worth the increase in price to me.PICTURES: I am including a picture of my 2 gallon and 5 gallon stock pots side by side. I also have a picture of these 2 pots with the Cuisinart 12 quart pot in between them.I purchased the Cuisinart 77-412 Chef s Classic Stainless 4 Piece 12-Quart Pasta/Steamer Set at full price.5Chicken soup time! It is finally fall and couldn't wait to make a big pot of chicken stock and then Chicken Noodle soup (to freeze for use as needed). It was so much easier this year with the pasta insert to remove all the stock elements, take the chicken for inclusion in the soup and throw out all the stock vegetables, herbs, etc. Then I cut up the chicken, threw a bunch of noodles and fresh vegetables into the stock and finally added most of the chicken from the stock. And these pots washed like a dream (manually....I don't put stainless into the dish washer as a rule, even when I can.) Cleanup was achieved in 10 minutes and I curled up with a big bowl of soup as my reward! Thanks Cuisinart AND Amazon. 5RustAfter only a few weeks of use, the pot and strainer have started rusting. I've been very careful to wash promptly after using, so this seems like a design flaw with whatever type of steel this is made out of.1FORGET ABOUT EXPENSIVE COOKWARE This line of Cuisinart is exquisite for cooking and looking good in the kitchen. Don't waste your money on All-Clad or Viking when you can have comparable cookware at a fraction of the cost. They have all shapes and sizes for all your cooking needs. 5Found black particles in my pasta, despite washing pots twice. Black residue in pot & pasta insertI washed everything twice before cooking & still found black particles in my pasta. I then washed everything again two times very well with hot water, detergent, and a brush. I then took a paper towel and wiped the inside of the "spaghetti insert" and there was black residue all over the paper towel. No matter how many times I wiped, there was still residue showing on the paper towel. It took me 2 hours of hard work to clean 95% of it off, but there is still some in various places. It seems to be mostly on the welding seams & on the insides of the strainer holes. If you just wash the item and never use paper towels to dry it, you might not notice the black residue. That's why I didn't realize until I found black particles in my spaghetti.1
