3 Years without a Key---upgraded Batteries Been using this since it arrived in November 2014, so after 3 years of use I think its time for a review. Put this on a newer door that already had a deadbolt, so installation went easily. I set the automatic feature to lock itself after 30 seconds. For those of us that live in a 4 season zone, know our doors and windows open and close differently according to outside temperatures. I've had to make some minor adjustments here and there during different seasons, but nothing major. It will sound an 'alarm' so to speak when the lock is not fully engaged. Some reviewers complain about that but, our house having been burglarized, I think this is a great feature. If your door opens differently according to outside temperatures, plan on doing a little minor shaving and chiseling here and there and keep a key within outside reach for a year or so until it works perfectly, like mine does now. I also discovered the perfect batteries for this. They are sold here on Amazon. Quite by accident I put the 3.7v 14500 2000mah rechargeable Lithium batteries in the power pack one day. What a difference! It no longer sounds and moves like its battery powered. Now, with these batteries, it moves and sounds like it an electric lock. Long story short, after seasonal adjustments to make sure the lock properly engages in all temperatures, and with the upgraded batteries, 3 years without a key! 5So far, so good. Other reviewers have mentioned that it didn't last very long, but all I can say is that it installed fairly easily (about 35 minutes, but it was professional installer that I arranged through Amazon to do it - GREAT service by the way!!! Hire a Handyman). And for now...it's working great.UPDATE: My device needed new batteries today, exactly 1 year, 10 months and 3 weeks after original installation. That doesn't seem to bad to me, but I have to admit that (since I work from home), I don't enter/exit the house nearly as much as those who don't. I wil l also say that I didn't pick up on any kind of warning that the batteries were "going" - just all of a sudden the keypad was "dead". Good darn thing I still carry a set of keys in my purse! :) BTW, batteries were a BREEZE to change (see photos). Hope that helps others a bit. 5Seems to be working fine, but I have some concerns The old deadbolt on our front door finally gave up the ghost, and I wanted to replace it with an electronic lock. I have always been a fan of the easy re-keying of Kwikset locks, so this was a natural choice.=== The Good Stuff ===* The lock has a nice, professional look to it, and the bright brass has a nice shine to it. The buttons light up with an LED green glow (hint-you have to press the lock button to turn on the light), and it genuinely easier to use than fumbling with a key.* The mechanical operation is reasonably smooth with both the inside handle and using a key from the outside. Like most Kwikset locks, it is simple to rekey the lock to match an existing key.* This lock was installed about four months ago, and has been working fine since=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* The lock does not come with a drive-in latch. This is the type that is only a round cylinder, not a strike plate. After waiting a half-hour on the phone, Kwikset sent one in the mail for no charge, although it took two attempts to send the right one. This added a week of delay to the project.* The installation was a lot simpler than I thought it was. When I first installed the lock, it seemed to have a "hitch" in it. Just turning the mechanical portion of the lock seemed very rough and "clunky". I thought it was installed incorrectly, and spent an afternoon trying to get a smooth mechanical operation. Turns out that is the way it is supposed to be, and it worked fine once the motor was installed.* If you look closely at the sides of the interior mechanism, you will see two small set screws. These hold in the motor and battery assembly, and also allow you to reach the buttons which allow the unit to be programmed. Unfortunately one of these screw holes were stripped when I received the lock. I just decided to live with it, since the lock had already taken a week to get installed, but I am sure I will regret this. This is a ridiculous problem to have in a $100 lock.=== Summary ===After fighting with the installation, the lock has been working fine. But with the "thunk" of the mechanism, and the missing screw, I do not have high hopes for long-term reliable operation. 3Brush up on your spanish...my lock only had English instructions for the first half of the install! Overall, I like the lock. It works pretty well. My only complaints have to do with the instructions.Like most products these days, this lock came with instructions in multiple languages. There were two sets, one that had English and two other languages (I didn't pay attention to which two) and another set with three totally different languages. I was, obviously, working from the English set.And it went fine up through step 4. Then I turned the page, and found that the rest of the instructions weren't printed in English!!Well, I'm a bright guy...and there were pictures, so I soldiered on! But there's one part where they point to the 'lock' button, and then another arrow points to the deadbolt itself. It seems obvious from the pictures that to test the lock, you're supposed to push the 'lock' button, and the deadbolt is supposed to move out and then back in, to calibrate the lock! But it doesn't. Obviously, there was something in the print that the pictures didn't make obvious.Well, OK...I went to my computer and found the directions online. I didn't READ them on the PC...I just verified steps 5 and on were in English, and printed them. When I got back downstairs, and went looking for step 5, it wasn't there. Why? because the directions are in a PDF on a page that's legal sized...so my printer printed the top two thirds and cut off the rest! Crap!So after printing them again, I got back to work. That's when I found out I was supposed to hold the lock button WHILE inserting battery pack, and keep the button depressed while the lock cycled. I guess I'm not so smart...I didn't get that from two simple arrows pointing to the lock button and the deadbolt!OK...so at this point, the lock is installed. I set my code, and that worked fine as well! Finally, I was on to re-keying the lock to use my old keys! The tool to re-key the lock, and the accompanying instructions, are packaged individually. These instructions WERE printed in English! They tell you, both in words and with pictures, that you're supposed to turn the key 1/4 turn, insert the little tool, remove your old key, and then insert the new one. What they DON'T tell you is that the tool you insert doesn't go all the way in. It feels like it hits a wall, and just stops. The directions say you might feel a click. There wasn't any click. There was nothing at all that felt like the pin had done anything! But, it apparently HAD done what it was supposed to do, because I finally just decided to take it on faith, and move on. From that point on, it worked exactly as the instructions said it would. So, long story short, just know that the little tumbler tool might not make any noise, and it won't feel like it's actually done anything!Anyway...I took off a star because the instructions suck! But on the other hand, the lock seems to work pretty well, and by the way, it allowed me to re-key it to match my other locks even though they are NOT kwik-set locks or keys. Apparently, they have to be 'Kwik-set TYPE' keys!I like that I can add a code of up to 8 digits...cause I'm paranoid! You can add up to 36 codes, I think, though I can't imagine 36 people I'd want to have access to my house. I'm not even sure I'm going to tell my wife... 4Great lock....when it works....for a year... This is a great, phenomenal lock....during the YEAR it worked. I purchased one of these in January 2015. The lock was awesome. It was not a regretted decision which we worried about after reading reviews. (Side note - in the first house, we had changed the batteries, no problems as other people had claimed in reviews said it would die after battery changes.)We moved to a new house March 2016. We carefully removed it from the first door, packaged it back in the original packaging and shipped it in living room boxes to the next house. Installed it on the new door, just as we had before, following directions, no bumps, no jarring, no nothing. It worked for about another 3 months, claimed it needed new batteries. Changed the batteries and all it would do is beep at us. Called Kwikset because supposedly their support is amazing. The customer service agent was really nice and located in the USA and tried to be helpful, but in the end told us it was dead and that something had probably failed inside the lock and that it was really common for this type of lock. Ok, that's fine, you would think the manufacturer would warrant it since it's a common occurrence. It was six months out of the 1-year warranty so they wouldn't do anything about it. Then my stupid self, because the lock had been so great over the past year and a half and I love that I can personally rekey them, bought a second one hoping it was a fluke.Long story short, here I sit a year and 2 months later with a second lock that will lock but will not unlock that just beeps at me after a battery change. DO NOT GET THIS LOCK unless you only have plans for one year of use or less. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.A couple of things in case you were wondering for your purchase or if your lock is doing the same thing:-The lock is not exposed to extreme heat as it gets morning sun from sunrise until about 11 am and then it's in the shade for the rest of the day. (In both houses)-The lock doesn't get exposed to extreme moisture. It's really humid here, but it's never been touched by rain or had anything spilled on it from inside or out.-I have no kids so it has only been used by two 30+ year old adults being used 6 to 10 times a day on average.-We changed the batteries in the past year, so this would have been the second or third battery change for the second lock.-We figure it started to go bad about 3 days ago when we would enter the key code and then the lock would unlock half way, but not enough to open the door. We thought it was just the dogs being really excited and pushing the door from the other side, but further testing proved otherwise and the dogs have never done that before. And we just changed the batteries last week, so we know it's not that.-We always use fresh, brand new Duracell batteries. Straight out of the package. 1Initial review (See Update) Have only had the unit for less than 24 hours but I wanted to give a quick review of the lock and maybe offer some advise.....so far all seems to be working as advertised. The mechanism is a bit on the loud side but I wasn't expecting high end operation at this price point. I would advise that you watch and follow the online installation video. Makes installation and programming much easier. I will certainly write a follow up review on durability or if/when issues develop.UPDATE 4/27/18: A little over a year since purchase and all keeps working well. Rechargeable batteries (not included) last several months before needing to be recharged which is an indication of low power consumption. The Auto-Lock feature is, at times, hit or miss but not an issue for us since we mostly make sure to hit the lock button when leaving home. Definitely recommend if wanting an electric lock on a budgetUPDATE 2/17/19: we continue to be very happy with this product but wanted to add an update. In our previous update I mentioned that the auto-lock feature was hit-or-miss. After switching from rechargeable batteries to disposable lithium batteries we noticed that the auto-lock feature has worked 100% of the time. It seems that even fully charged rechargeable batteries lack the power this mechanism requires to operate properly. We also noticed the auto lock feature Works quicker than it did with rechargeable batteries 4Great value for the money. Looks great, operates easy, easy installation. I do wish it was app-enabled. I like it, looks great! I got a great price on Amazon compared to shopping in the stores. I didn't read close enough when researching and thought the only difference between this 913 model and the 914 model was the number of key codes you could program. I forgot to verify if this also had zwave so you could use it with an App, it does not. This 913 model is not app-capable like the 914 model has for it. In the end that's alright, the proce difference between the two models is significant and I was on the fence whether I trusted making my home exposed to SMART home hackers anyway. So it's just a deadbolt, and attractive one, that adds the piece of mind of being able to get back into your house when you forget your keys inside or just want your child to be able to get back in when ever then need to after being at a friends. I like that there are multiple codes but I'm not sure why there are 16 if there's not app support to track usage. Seems like 2 codes would suffice: 1 for guests that you'd remove after the need, and one master code. I just installed this tonight, if there is a significant problem with battery life, I'll add that information to my review. It's a concern, and most-likely a reality. It takes 4 AA batteries. I'm not sure how long those last before needing replacement. However, I do have the piece of mind again that if my lock's batteries are dead, I can still use the deadbolt physical key to open the door (assuming I have it on me). Oh, and there's a great extra feature, inside the device you can toggle on an auto-lock after 30 seconds feature, which is a very great security feature. The ability to re-key this lock yourself is terrific, and the reason I chose this over a Schlage because with the Schlage I'd have to pay the much higher cost at the hardware store and have them re-key it at the time of purchase, otherwise a Schlage online would still need me to get a locksmith to re-key it to match the rest of my entry locks key.So installation was very simple. As easy as any typical/standard deadbolt installation. 4Died after 2nd battery change This lock looks great and worked very well for a couple of years. Batteries went low so we replaced. Then with no issues and kep using the lock. After the second battery change, however, the lick wouldn't work. Went through the install process to do the automatic "handing" procedure, but the lock still refused to work. It just clicks and gets stuck. Researching the issue, it seems many others have seen this failure mode.I cannot recommend this lock to anyone. 1Watch for manufacturing defect I purchased two units and was having trouble installing the inside assembly. I couldn't make the piece line up according to the directions. I searched online and found many people with the same trouble - the motor assembly has the connecting piece installed upside down! You cannot install it and I didn't see a way to switch it. Very unhappy with this as I was excited to get what I thought would be a great new piece of hardware that matches my current front handle. Now I don't want to buy Kwikset and I don't want to spend the money to change other handles so they match. So disappointed with this product.DISCLAIMER: while I am not a professional installer, I am quite handy and do almost all of the work around my house. This is not a case of an unskilled person that just didn't know how to assemble something. 1Over a year and a half and it's still working great. I purchased this item on July 1, 2015 and it's been over 1-1/2 years of experience with this item. It's still functioning great. Originally put some Duracell batteries in this thing and they lasted several months. Replaced them with Rayovacs and lasted another several months. It's now running on some rechargeable eneloops and it's been about 4 months right now. If they last another 2 months, I'll be very happy and will need to update my review on the eneloops. For those not having much luck with rechargeables, try the eneloops. I swear, they are the BEST rechargeable AA/AAA cells I've ever experienced. You can get them at Cosco for less than what Amazon lists.[Pros]- Batteries last at least several months before having to replace them.- Rechargeable ENELOOP has lasted 4 months and still going... I will update with overall.- Been over 1-1/2 years and still works great. No issues.- Convenience of not having to deal with metal keys.- Add guest pins for neighbors when out of town to water plants etc. Returning the favor of course!- Easy to install, RTFM and you will be fine. Also, don't lose the manual and the included allen hex key!- Buttons have not worn out or can expose the numbers used in the pin. I've read reviews where the touchpad one can possibly expose the numbers due to wear. Just looking at the buttons. When I got the z-wave model, I didn't get the touch (916) since these buttons are perfectly fine.- Hit lock key again to show backlight in the dark. I've never had to use it since my home is automated. If the power goes out, then I probably would need to use it.- Works when the power is out since it runs on batteries.- Looks great and matches all the other ORB kwikset handles I've installed.[Cons]- None since purchase![Regrets]- Wish I had purchased the z-wave model at the time.[Additional notes]- Comparing this with the new z-wave model, the keypad on the z-wave version is a little smaller so the paint marks outlined the new one. I decided to try the keypad from this one with the z-wave version and it works. So the keypad from the new one is connected to this (non-z-wave) model. Hope this info is useful for those who plan to upgrade to the newer smart versions.[Conclusion]I've read some strange reviews, such as the guy who removed the plastic window thinking that's how to replace the batteries when the manual doesn't illustrate to do that. The plastic part is for z-wave and zigbee radio frequencies. For those with battery issues, it's probably the cold weather. Lithiums might be better to use. In my case, I live in the south and the eneloops work great.I'm so happy with this product that I decided to upgrade the one on my front door with a z-wave model. I've moved this one to the interior garage door. My wife would accidentally lock me out in the garage not knowing I was out there. I can easily enter a pin and get back inside now.I'm ready to buy one of the z-wave interior locks and another z-wave deadbolt for the backdoor.I will be writing a review on the z-wave version. I'm using some fresh recharged eneloops on the new one. Hopefully it lasts as long as this one has. 5
