Customer Reviews

Flimsy key. So this lock is probably excellent to keep your bike from being stolen but that's because once it's locked not even the owner can unlock it. This is this first weekend I've had it and it has taken a lot of patience to get it unlocked. Today it just simply did not work. The key is very flimsy so if you turn a bit too much it bends and won't work at all. I had to call uber to take me home to get the second key. Now i have to take uber back to try and unlock it. Pay a bit more for a better lock so you don't have to pay for uber. UPDATE: so I took the other key to the bike and it still wouldn't unlock. I found a friend of mine who is a mechanic, he confirmed the lock is broken (third use ever). We ended up unscrewing the no parking sign from the base and lifting it through the lock then putting it back. So now I have this lock hanging from my frame until I can figure out how to cut it off. Main lesson learned aside from don't buy Master Lock, don't lock up to a no parking sign - it literally took less than a minute to take the bike. 1Very strong metal, very poor quility of the locking mechanism! very strong metal (that's why it's Sold Secure Gold, but the lock mechanism is poor quality! It sometimes has jamming issues! First day, and key stocked few times, I used mechanic oil to get it out. Overall if you no have budget you can get it, and be ready to play around to open and close it once in a while! Lubricate it well and you will be fine! Also use WD40 4Great lock but storage bracket is junk This a fantastic lock and so worth the money. It received a gold rating and lives up to it. I feel very comfortable knowing it is keeping my bike safe.My only complaint is the holder that comes with it is pure garbage. If you have a way to fasten it to your bike or throw it in a bag, please do! Otherwise, it will fall off when you go over potholes and medium to large cracks. The quick release level does not get nearly tight enough. 3Pay attention to the negative reviews My early review was overly flippant. I'm completely altering it now after using two of these locks for months. This product is a strange combo of a thick and formidable Gold rated U bolt with a cheap locking mechanism and bend-prone keys. Truly a gamble. My neighbors kid me about the locks because you never know if they will open on the first try or not at all.The pins on the inside of the lock get stuck in the chamber. That's the issue. When the pins are stuck the key will insert virtually all of the way but not quite. It is not obvious that the key isn't in the proper place. The difference between ideal and no chance is perhaps 1/8 of an inch. But when the key is partially blocked in the chamber it's very easy and natural to force the key somewhat, causing it to bend. It will bend will little encouragement. I've had to resort to the backup key and then carefully hammer the original key back into shape. And I'm comparatively gentle and careful in situations like this. I'm sure many keys have been bent beyond hope or repair.Another reviewer recommended Break Free CLP. That spray does help more than most. It foams up nicely and clears out some dirt. But it's not always sufficient. I've had to resort to tiny tools and essentially lock picking techniques to free the pins and allow the key to fully insert. I've never spent so much time staring into a key hole aided by a tiny flashlight from Dollar Tree. In fact, it wasn't until I started looking into the chamber that I figured out what the heck was wrong. If you don't look inside and don't notice that the key is slightly less than fully deployed it's a maddening situation of a key that only turns halfway and then gets stuck, refusing to open the lock and seemingly willing to fail forever. This is hardly a plug and play lock. I now have to pay attention on every usage, making sure to do everything slowly and carefully. One of my two locks works fine but the other is a daily battle. If I had to do it all over again I would have spent an extra $30 on a top rated 16mm lock with a competent entryway and key, like the Brute. 3been good for me it is perfect for me so far. I do not need or use the frame holder. It is a little short for some situations but thats always a trade off of weight to size. The price is right for the quality you get. 5I don't understand the negative reviews. Great lock at unbelievable price! I own a lot of bike locks of all sorts: Cables, chains, u-locks, weird "handcuffs" and others. Most have a good use in the right situation. A u-lock is one of the most important type of locks to have and I have several. I recently decided to purchase this Master Lock 8195D as a "medium" u-lock, something that would be better than, say, the Kryptonite Series 2 but not in the same league as the Kryptonite New York locks. At under $20 this lock seems to be about the equivalent of the Kryptonite Evolution (which costs more than twice as much): The shank is locked on both sides rather than just one so a thief needs to cut the shank twice, not just once. The metal seems strong and quite thick although the metal isn't covered by a very thick/soft vinyl so it looks less thick than the Evo. The lock mechanism works well and the lock comes with two keys.A lot of the negative reviews focus on the mechanism refusing to work or being difficult to operate. It's important to pre-treat a bike lock and then regularly maintain it with Lock-Eze Graphited Lock Fluid or something similar; or at least WD-40. I use Lock-Eze on all my locks as soon as I buy them and then again at the beginning and end of every cold season. The treatment keeps the lock operating smoothly and prevents water from freezing in the mechanism. It also helps to remain calm and deliberate when operating a key in a bike lock.Other negative reviews mention the mount. I don't use the mount of this or any other lock. I use three different bikes so putting a mount on one isn't going to do me much good. Besides, it's easier to carry a lock in a pannier or backpack or just hooked onto my belt or around my shoulder, depending on the lock type. Maybe this lock's mount is terrible but it isn't necessary so it makes no difference to me.For the price, currently under $20, this lock cannot be beat for a medium-weight u-lock. It's way better than more expensive, lighter, single-locking u-locks like the Kryptonite Series 2. 5A secure lock that works well and at a great price. A secure lock that works well and at a great price. Two of these, located low on your bicycle and securing wheels and frames to immovable objects, offer an extremely cost-effective alternative to more expensive solutions. If a competent bicycle thief really wants your bicycle, it will be very difficult to stop him.You want to make your bicycle more work and so less appealing that the others. 5Great Lock The bracket to hold it is a weak spot, but if you don't need it or use it, consider the review 5 stars. My lock opens and closes very smoothly, like I expect it to. I can only suspect that the 1 star user had a defective one. It feels solid and I can't imagine anyone without an angle grinder getting through it. It's a good size to fit my bike without much extra space. Despite it's solid build, it's only 2.6 lbs. And it comes with a $1000 anti-theft guarantee, which is sufficient for me. 4I'm not sure what the negative reviews were about - ... I'm not sure what the negative reviews were about - I use this every day with no problems. The mount works well, too. The fact that the lock is straight on both sides makes it sliiiightly trickier to lock up, but it also makes it more secure. This is a bargain if you live in a place where a gold-rated lock is necessary - saved me 50 or 60 bucks - and the weight is also impressively low. Fully endorse! 5You can easily tell if the disc inside the cylider is out ... Sold Secure Gold lock for under $25? I tested the lock before using it on my bike after seeing so many 1star reviews with lock jamming. I managed to duplicate the lock getting jam/not turning problem. It has to do with the lock cylinder discs inside the lock being out of alignment, usually the lowest one. It happens if you pull the key out too fast as you are turning the lock or if you turn the key when it's not fully inserted. It will cause the lowest disc(s) in the cylinder to go out of alignment. Once that happens, the key will not be able to be fully inserted again thus the lock will not open. You can easily tell if the disc inside the cylider is out of alignment just by looking inside the cylinder. And once you realign the cylinder disc with the key or a tooth pick, you will be able to operate the lock again. 5 stars to help offset all the 1 star reviews because of this problem. I would be upset and give 1 star too if i locked my bike and cant get the lock to open. Again, Sold Secure Gold lock for under $25. 5
