great peel for the moneyMy husband loves his new peel. The only drawback (He said subtract 1/2 star, but I couldn't so I subtracted 1 star) was it needed to be sanded in spots for a smoother finish. It was a bargain for the price. He also oiled it with a food-grade wood-treating oil before using it, as he does our wooden cutting boards. Also don't cut pizza on this peel or any peel. They are not cutting boards. It functions superbly with a little corn meal to put a pizza on the hot stone in our oven to cook and to take it out when it is cooked to perfection. The handle is the perfect length for use in a kitchen stove oven.4GreatHuge and built well. I got the biggest pizza peel I could find because I m tired of trying to concoct ways of getting pizzas in and out of the oven.What I should have done was actually measure my oven. This baby is a hair too wide. While some reviewers would give it a 1 rating because it didn t fit, it s just gonna take a quick trip to the bandsaw and then sander. I spent a couple bucks over the one that would have actually fit, but it s not the company s fault. It sure isn t the peel s fault. I m the idiot that didn t measure first.5A couple minutes with some fine sandpaper and those problems were fixed Listen this is a cheap pizza peel and I'm not going to go overly critical on it. There are a few spots where you could see glue had oozed out from the seams of the strips of wood they glued together and some spots weren't sanded perfectly. A couple minutes with some fine sandpaper and those problems were fixed. I also cut down the handle probably in half. This thing was unwieldy in a kitchen of my size until I chopped the handle down. Granted now I'll never be able to use it to get my pizza out of some huge industrial oven but I wasn't planning on using it like that anyhow. 4So Soft It Grows MoldLooks great cool when you get it.. but the wood is very soft and unfinished so it s like a sponge that grows mold within weeks. See mold specs in pic1Strange chemical smellThe product itself is simple and looks well designed. But it has a clinging, strong chemical odor that has remained even after a couple of washings in warm soapy water. I don't feel 100% safe cooking with it and plan to return it ASAP.1Good valueVery nice. I oiled it up to keep the grain from raising and to keep it slick. With a dusting of flour or corn meal, the pizza slides off easily onto the grill.5Smells Terrible! Wood smelled terrible! Could not get smell to go away. Made food taste terrible. Do NOT recommend! 1Good Product for Great PriceI purchased this pizza peel because it was 100% wood and listed at a great price (hence the 5 Star Rating), and so far it has worked great. Prior to using I found how to seal the product - using pharmaceutical grade mineral oil (purchased from either Amazon or a local pharmacy) - to ensure that it doesn t stain or split, and after several uses, it is working great. As an improvement, a hole located at the narrow end of the handle (for hanging purposes) would be nice, as the peel is rather long to be placed in most cabinets or shelves.5Form follows function.We use it for pizzas (naturally) but also for letting bread dough rise before sliding it into a preheated dutch oven to make artisan bread. It works exceptionally well for that because it means you don't risk knocking out too much air in the transfer. We've used it almost every day for the last month and it's perfect. The wood has a great finish to it, nicely constructed with no rough patches so everything slides easily. Wish we'd bought it sooner.5Good Pizza 'Ap-peel'I purchased two peels--14x16 ($18) & 12x14 ($14). The 12x14 is probably all I need. Both arrived in good shape. Before using the 12x14 peel, I sanded it with 220 grip sand paper. The 12x14 peel is the perfect size for my 8oz dough balls. I had no problem moving pizzas from the peel to the cooking steel in the oven. However, I do use a bit of flour and semolina on the peel.I attached some photos: new peel out of the package, peel with pizza, completed pepperoni/sausage pizza on a cutting peel. I use an acacia wood peel for cutting & serving (Mountain Woods PPAL Gourmet Acacia Hardwood Pizza Peel/Cutting Board). Pizza: 8oz ball, 24-hour cold proofed dough. Cooking time: 7 min, 45 sec. Oven: 500 deg-F. Cooking surface: Lodge cast iron pizza pan.5Board warpedThe board was great for the past 4 weeks. Last night It was cleaned off and left to dry. This morning I found it completely warped and was no longer flat. Apparently I am 2 days past being able to return for a replacement.1Nice large size I already had a metal pizza peel but needed a wooden one to get the pizza's into the oven. I've noticed reviews mentioning that this didn't work well for getting pizza's into the oven. Wooden peels are not meant for that purpose, you need a metal one for that.I use a little semolina slower under the pizza dough to ensure it slides off and into my oven nicely and it works perfectly! I love the large surface size of this peel because it doesn't limit the size of pizza I can make. (any larger and the pizza wouldn't fit in my oven)The wood used to make this is a soft wood and there were a few areas that needed a bit of sanding when it arrived but nothing major. I also ended up cutting the handle down so I could fit it my cabinet for storage between uses. 5Very happy so farI used this peel today for the first time. I stretched my dough (8.0 oz dough to 11 diameter) on a lightly floured counter. I dusted the peel generously with corn meal and then transferred the dough onto the peel by hand. I sauced and cheesed the dough on the peel, and then slid the pie onto the stone in a 500 degree oven. It slid off the peel instantly. When the pie was done, I lifted the front edge off of the stone with a metal spatula and slid the peel underneath. No problem. It was easy to get the whole pie onto the peel. I then transferred the pie to a cooling rack.The peel arrived in excellent condition. I washed it with warm, soapy (Dawn) water, dried it by hand, and let it air-dry completely (about 5 hours). Then I oiled it with mineral oil. See photos for size.Contrary to what some reviewers have said, there is no strange or powerful odor. Nor were there any cracks or warping.Again, this was the first time I used this. If there are problems in the future, I will update this review. For now this definitely gets 5 stars.Update 11/21: I used this peel for the 4th time today. (My husband is out of town and I am using the opportunity to hone my pizza-making skills.) Still no problems. I've been cutting down the amount of corn meal needed to keep the dough from sticking to the peel. Today I used 1 teaspoon and that worked fine for an 11" pie. I am still very happy with this peel. No odor, no warping, no splitting. (I do wash, dry, and oil after each use.)5Perfect size for home use Good quality, I'd be surprised to find a wooden peel that couldn't use a very light sanding with fine sandpaper or 0000 steel wool.It is not overly long, which is perfect for home use; if you're looking for a commercial one to reach in the back of a multi-deck oven then you should look elsewhere. Only thing I may change on it is drilling a hole on the handle to hang but it is left to you. Would buy again. 5
